Electrophilic addition of bromine to acetylene (ethyne)

Principle
When bromine reacts with ethine (acetylene), the first step is the production of trans-1,2-dibromoethene. When more bromine is added, this reacts to form 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane. As a by-product of this reaction, cis-1,2 dibromoethene is formed. In the gas chromatogram, three peaks can be identified after the reaction. The first corresponds to non-polare trans-1,2-dibromoethene, the second to the polare cis-1,2dibromoethene. The end product 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane is exhibited in the form of a broad peak about three minutes further into the chromatogram.
