Separation of inorganic anions by TLC

Principle

Despite its high separation efficiency and sensitivity, thin layer chromatography (TLC) is characterised by low equipment cost, which makes it ideally suited for use in schools. In this experiment, a mixture of sodium salts is separated on a silica gel layer and the individual components are identified by comparing them with known salts analysed in parallel. The Rf values are determined for chloride, chlorite, chlorate and perchlorate ions.
