Amontons' law describes the relationship between the pressure and the temperature of a fixed quantity of gas at constant volume. A glass syringe enclosed in a glass jacket is used to capture about 50 ml of gas. The water in the glass jacket is warmed up gradually. Each time the temperature increases about 5°C, the plunger of the gas syringe is pushed back in to the initial volume and the temperature and pressure of the gas are recorded.
A bar magnet and a magnetic stirring bar in the glass jacket can be used to stir the heating bath fluid in order to keep the temperature distribution uniform.
