In this experiment a geared motor (30:1 ratio) is used to drive the elastically coupled elements of a wave machine via an eccentric. In order to suppress reflections at the open end of the oscillating system, the small bars under the oscillating pieces are allowed to dip into a tub of water.
Each oscillating element has a panel which passes through a light barrier during its oscillation as illustrated, thus breaking the beam at regular intervals. A digital counter is then used to measure the period of oscillation.
