This experiment covers the separation and analysis of traces of sand, clay and humus in soil. These substances, both mineral and organic, appear in various types of soil and have a major effect on soil properties. The quantity of humus is the basis for the fertility of the soil. Sand, clay and humus content are determined by elutriating a fine sample of soil obtained by sieving with the aid of an elutriation cylinder. The instructions for the experiment also require determination of the heat retention properties of both dry and moist soil samples and the determination of moisture content.
