Active carbon is a good absorbent and as such is excellent when used as a filter. During water treatment, for example, active carbon filters are used to remove pesticides and detergents (soap and washing-up liquid). The cleansing of water can be demonstrated impressively by growing cress seeds on it. On distilled water in a petri dish (left), cress grows normally. In a dish with two drops of washing-up liquid added (centre), it can be seen that the growth of the cress is severely hindered. In a dish where the added washing-up liquid has been filtered out by active carbon (right), the cress grows normally again.
