Modification of plastics (5): production of polystyrene foam

Product No: P1173000

Principle

Polystyrene containing n-pentane as a foaming agent can easily increase its original volume by 20 to 50 times when heated with steam. If pre-foamed polystyrene of this type is sintered together in a closed mould to make a section with a closed cell structure, the resulting moulded polystyrene foam part exhibits high strength at low density and is therefore ideally suited for packaging material and for thermal and sound insulation boards. The experiment uses simple materials to help students understand this industrial processing technique.
