Principle

A nickel, tungsten or bismuth rod is brought between the faces of pole pieces 06493-00, attached to U-shaped magnet 06320-00. Rods made of paramagnetic or ferromagnetic materials align themselves parallel to the lines of the magnetic field, whereas ones made of diamagnetic materials assume a perpendicular orientation.
