Level control

Product No: P1306000

Principle

The specimen tube material absorbs some of the beta radiation from the source of radiation, so that the protective cap should be removed from the counter tube to obtain higher count rates. The filling height should not be known to the students, in order to create a genuine problem situation. This can be achieved either by filling the tube before the period, or by just one of the students doing it. Radiation barriers with beta rays are not only suitable for controlling how full nontransparent containers are, they can also be used to count packaged goods on conveyor belts and for filling control with the sorting out of insufficiently filled containers. Such uses can also be illustrated by using beakers or boxes filled to different amounts with
sand.

Task

To use a radiation barrier to determine up to which height a specimen tube is filled with lead.
