Current-carrying coils have a magnetic field around them which resembles that of a bar magnet. Inside the coil, the magnetic field lines are parallel to the axis of the coil. The direction of the field depends on the direction of the current in the coil. The magnetic field can be demonstrated using iron filings and also by means of small compass needles.
