Principle

The pH value (a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions) in running waters depends on the geological conditions, the pollution load that is caused by agricultural production, and on plant activities. This experiment shows how the pH value of a stream changes even at a short distance and just a few kilometres away from the spring.

Benefits

  • Experiment is part of an experiment set with numerous experiments in ecology
  • Universal handheld measurement device can also be used for other measurement parameters relevant in ecology, biology and chemistry
  • Outdoors measurement possible, for mobile use
  • Graphical display of measurement data
  • Data can be saved on SD memory card
  • All data can be transferred onto a computer for data analysis
  • Data analysis software can be freely distributed

Tasks

  1. Measurement of the pH values of a watercourse at different locations
  2. Comparison of the pH values
  3. Comparison with other exemplary water bodies

What you can learn about

  • Factors influencing the pH value of water bodies
  • pH decrease effect of plant activity
  • pH value of rainwater
