A gas syringe which is sealed with engine oil is used to hold a volume of gas as it is heated. It is temperature controlled by a water bath in a glass jacket.
In the experimental procedure described here, measurements are made of the temperature dependence of the change in pressure at constant volume, and, directly subsequent to this, of the change in volume at constant pressure. The two parts of the experiment can also be completely separated from each other, when this is more understandable for the students.
