Function and Applications

To investigate the magnetic field distribution inside a hollow cylinder and inside a homogeneous cylindrical conductor.

Experiments which can be carried out with wire mesh cylinder (without electrolyte):

  • Verification of field intensity decrease proportionally to 1/r outside the conductor.
  • Verification of the fact that the whole interior of a hollow conductor is free of magnetic field.

Experiments which can be carried out in an electrolyte:

  • Verification of field intensity decrease proportionally to 1/r outside the conductor.
  • Linear increase of field intensity proportionally to r inside the conductor; conductor axis is free of field.
  • Disturbing fields due to usual current return leads are avoided by using the exterior wire mesh cylinder to carry back current, which causes the interior of the cylinder to be free of fields.

Equipment and technical data

  • PLEXIGLAS® cylinder in two plastic bases with handles.
  • On the interior of each front surface there is a large surface copper electrode with 4 mm socket.
  • The cylinder is surrounded by a brass wire mesh cylinder.
  • On both ends a metallic band with a 4 mm socket surrounds the cylinder completely.
  • Opening with overflow protection to fill in electrolyte as well as to introduce test coil (11004.00)  to carry out measurements.
  • Hollow cylinder: total length: 455 mm; length of the hollow space: 400 mm; interior diameter: 115 mm; total height: 200 mm; volume: approx. 4.2 l; electric connections: four 4 mm sockets.
