Principle

Indicators are dyes that indicate by a color change the presence of acids. Many of these indicators are dyes from naturally occurring fruits and vegetables. There are in addition to these naturally occurring technical manufactured dyes that can serve as indicators such as phenolphthalein. In this experiment students examine the effect of acids and alkalis on natural and industrially produced indicators. The natural and technical manufactured indicators are compared and determined which indicators are most suitable for acid detection.
