Photosynthesis of aquatic plants with Cobra SMARTsense

Article no: P4120769

Principle

Photosynthesis is performed by all green plants. On land this seems plausible, after all, organisms absorb gas and release gas. In water this only makes sense if you remember that water is a good solvent. Many gases can also be present in water. Carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water in the form of carbonic acid and oxygen (O2) also dissolves. This experiment is based on photosynthesis of algae and the relationship between photosynthesis and the gas pressures of CO2 and O2.

Tasks

  1. Measurement of the increase and decrease of the CO2 content in the air in a reaction vessel containing an aquatic plant

Learning objectives

This experiment is suitable either as a demonstration for teachers or as a practical lab exercise for biology students. It investigates the change in CO₂ concentration depending on light intensity. The goal is to understand that aquatic plants also carry out photosynthesis.

Benefits

  • Especially understandable and didactically prepared description of the experiment (reference to everyday life etc.) including protocol questions
  • Future-oriented teaching: Integration of sensors (Cobra SMARTsense) into digital science lessons
  • Increased motivation of students by using the intuitive measureAPP and increased media competence
  • Compact, easily transportable experimental setup
  • Suitable both as demo experiment and lab course experiment
  • Flexible test execution thanks to wireless data transmission
