Field Capacity and Soil Moisture with Cobra SMARTsense

Article no: P1520169

Principle

This experiment investigates which soils can store more water – i.e. which have a high field capacity. In addition, the properties that influence field capacity are examined.

Tasks

  1. Collect soil samples.
  2. Determine field capacity.
  3. Measure the moisture of the samples over time.

Learning Objectives

Students should be able to explain how different soil properties can influence the (usable) field capacity, and furthermore understand what specific requirements plants have of a soil. By the end of the experiment, students should be able to assess the extent to which prolonged periods of drought affect our local soils.

Benefits

  • The experiment is part of a complete solution with numerous experiments in the field of ecology.
  • Sensors suitable for mobile use.
  • Particularly clear and didactically prepared experiment description (everyday relevance, etc.) including protocol questions.
  • Future-oriented teaching: integration into digital science lessons using tablets or smartphones.
  • Increased student motivation through use of the intuitive measureAPP.
  • Enhancement of media literacy.
