Principle
Many motions can be represented as the superposition of two independent directions, for example horizontal and vertical. This two-dimensional decomposition makes it possible to break down complex motions into simpler components that can be investigated and analyzed separately. Through this decomposition, relationships between velocity, acceleration, and trajectory curvature become more apparent and can be described mathematically. With the MotionBoard, these motions can be recorded and analyzed with high precision.

Tasks
  1. Use a controller to operate two independent motors that drive the MotionDot in orthogonal directions.
  2. Measure the motion for different combinations of velocities and analyze the resulting overall motion.
  3. Record the position of the MotionDot in real time using the MotionBoard.
  4. Then allow an object to roll down an inclined plane.
  5. Determine from the measurement data the relationship between acceleration, the angle of inclination, and the acceleration due to gravity.
  6. Repeat the measurements to obtain characteristic motion curves.

Learning objective
Learners should recognize that any motion in a plane can be decomposed into two perpendicular component motions. They should become familiar with the concepts of horizontal and vertical motion, velocity, and acceleration. From the beginning of their study of mechanics, they should be able to decompose motions into orthogonal components, analyze measurement data graphically, and experimentally investigate the relationships between acceleration, inclination angle, and gravitational acceleration.
