Principle
If you make a ruler or knitting needle vibrate, its vibrations are transmitted to the air, where they continue as sound waves. If you lengthen or shorten the vibrating part, by pulling it over the edge of the table, the sound changes. Here it makes sense to actually try out these 'instruments' and discuss how the tones are produced in each case.
