Principle

The plant takes up water and inorganic nutrients with the roots, which must be transported from the roots to the tips of the leaves. For this purpose are the vascular bundles, which consist of two types of transport tissue, xylem and phloem. The basic function of the xylem (Greek: "wood") is the transport of water. Phloem is the living tissue, that carries the inorganic nutrients as well as the starch, produced by photosynthesis, into all parts of the plant.
