How to detect starch?

Article no: P9620400

Principle

Starch is only produced by plants and is therefore mainly found in cereal products or potatoes. One of the most important nutrients in our food is starch. In our body's metabolism, starch is broken down into sugar, which, together with fats, provides the energy needed by the human organism through respiration (=burning). Starch can be detected with the help of Lugol's solution (iodine-iodide solution) by an intense blue coloration. In the presence of starch, an intense blue / violet coloration occurs.
