Conversion of light into motion with Cobra SMARTsense Code

Article no. P9521569

Principle
Solar cells play an important role in the use of alternative energy sources, as they directly convert the sun’s radiant energy into electrical energy. In this experiment, the generated electrical energy is demonstrated very clearly by means of a small electric motor. An incandescent lamp is sufficient as a source of radiation.

Tasks
  1. Supply an electric motor with electrical energy from a solar battery.
  2. Using Cobra SMARTsense Code and Cobra SMARTsense Voltage, build an overvoltage protection circuit according to the instructions.
  3. Illuminate the solar cell and investigate how light intensity (brightness) affects the motor frequency.

Learning objective
In this student experiment, the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy is investigated. Students are also introduced to simple programming of a device for voltage monitoring and relay switching.

Benefits
  • Programming of the Code Actuator using the Scratch programming language or a trigger function.
  • Contact-safe design through puzzle-like interlocking modules.
  • Use of standard Cobra SMARTsense sensors for teaching in schools and universities.
  • Safe experimentation: the lamp is protected against accidental contact, the housing is well ventilated through ventilation openings, and it heats up only slightly.
  • The power supply used is versatile and particularly suitable for student experiments at all educational levels ("RiSU 2016 compliant").
