Unknown Principle

Nitrogen as a major component of  air can be obtained from it by removing the oxygen. In this experiment an air stream is passed over heated steel wool and passed into a pneumatic pan. This so "produced" nitrogen is examined for its characteristic properties which identifies Nitrogen. Nitrogen smothers combustion and must have a lower density than air, because nitrogen escapes upwards out of the open test tube and not downwardly.

Learning objectives

  •  Properties of nitrogen
  • Nitrogen smothers combustion reactions

Benefits

  • Easy teaching and efficient learning by using interactive experimentation PHYWE-Software
  • Experiment is part of a complete solution set with experiments for all Inorganic Chemistry matched with international curriculum: all topics are covered
