Principle
In vertical circular motion, an object moves along a circular path. Its velocity is always tangential to the path, while the centripetal force pulls the object toward the center of the circle. In addition, gravity acts vertically and changes the object's speed along the path. At the highest point, the speed must be sufficient for the object to complete the entire trajectory. This makes it possible to investigate the initial conditions that the MotionDot must satisfy in order to reach the highest point of the circular path. With the MotionBoard, the trajectory can be recorded with high precision.

Tasks
  1. Let the MotionDot travel along a semicircular path with different initial velocities and record the motion using the MotionBoard.
  2. Repeat the experiment on a three-quarter circular path.
  3. Compare the trajectories and analyze differences in speed and path characteristics.
  4. Investigate the boundary conditions at the highest point of the circular path.
  5. Repeat the measurements to obtain characteristic motion patterns.
Learning objective
Learners should recognize that vertical circular motion results from the combination of tangential velocity and centripetal force, while gravity changes the speed along the path. They should become familiar with the concepts of centripetal force, centrifugal force, kinetic energy, potential energy, and inertial reference frames. From the beginning of their study of mechanics, they should be able to analyze forces acting on an object, compare trajectories, and recognize energy transformations along the path.

Benefits
  • Precise digital recording of vertical circular motion in real time using the LABsense app
  • Analysis of speed, trajectory, and energy conversion
  • Clear demonstration of centripetal force and apparent forces
  • Improved understanding of inertial reference frames and motion dynamics
  • Ideal for lower and upper secondary education
