Principle

Calcium and magnesium react with water to form alkaline-earth hydroxides while at the same time issuing hydrogen. The aqueous solution of such hydroxides shows the typical properties of an alkaline solution. Calcium hydroxide solution also referred to as lime water is used for indicating the presence of carbon dioxide.

Tasks

Prepare a solution of calcium hydroxide (alkaline solution of calcium) and a solution of magnesium hydroxide (alkaline solution of magnesium) and study their properties.

Benefits

  • Easy teaching and efficient learning by using interactive experimentation PHYWE-Software
  • Experiment is part of a complete solution set with experiments for the topic acids, alkalis and salts matched with international curriculum: all topics are covered
