Principle

When PVC is decomposed thermally, hydrogen chloride evolves. When PVC waste is burnt and decomposed, hydrochloric acid is formed which is part of the "acid rain" and causes environmental damage. In this experiment students heat plastic (PVC) and study the resulting decomposition product.
