 Principle

Older plants develop discrete compartments in their cells where substances are stored. These are referred to as vacuoles (cell sap or cytosol compartments). They are surrounded by a thin membrane and thus separated from the viscous plasma of the cell. The vacuoles of some plant species contain pigments and are then particularly easy to recognize under the microscope. However, the major proportion of the vacuole consists of water.
